Inversion Benefits

There are so many benefits of inversions!!
I came across this very old video of world renowned yogi Yogacharya BKS Iyengar. He was explaining the importance of inversions and how inversion benefits the activities of the brain. I can vouch for the benefits of inversion on a personal level.
Dr. Karen Koffler, medical director of Canyon Ranch Miami and formerly director of Integrative Medicine at Evanston Northwestern Hospital, explains the benefits of these inversions for the brain:
“Inverted positions that are assumed in yoga alter the blood flow (including lymphatic drainage) and flow of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). If there is increased blood flow to the area, there will be increased bioavailability of oxygen and glucose—the two most important metabolic substrates for the brain. It follows then that cells bathed in a solution that is rich in factors required for the creation of neurotransmitters (like norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin) will be better able to produce these chemicals.”

I on the other hand have always felt that it is the emotional and psychological journey that makes inversion practice so valuable and enriching. In fact, it is not uncommon to feel immediately uplifted after an inversion. If you listen to the explanation of inversions and how it affects the different sections of the mind the feeling of “uplifted” would make sense. Psychologically, inversions can break down some personal barriers. If you have taken classes with me I often explain how we prison ourselves in fear, and how practicing Aerial Yoga takes you into a deeper journey within, Inversion is one of those activities that makes you more aware of your fears. When we approach this type of practice we realize that it is consistent mindful dedication without ambition, letting go of all that is holding you back, and an open, welcoming attitude toward the teacher and assistance that is the secret to a successful inversion pose. Inversions can also help develop patience, focus, and listening skills. I often cue closing our eyes when in an aerial inversion, to help with focusing and deeper connection with yourself and your body. Closure of eyes I believe shuts out the visual impossibilities and boundaries, our mind enters the body awareness more acutely. And slowly as the awareness of body increases, a level of trust and confidence builds in, and that strength is NOT limited just to aerial inversions, something deeper inside unlocks and your journey within begins.important.
Aerial Yogis are often surprised by how much they can achieve and uncover about themselves, impossible seems more attainable, and a new sense of accomplishment, pride in the capabilities of their mind and body increases, and self confidence grows. Inversion practice in aerial hammocks fully supported are magical on every plane.
Benefits of Inversion for physical body:
Improves circulation of blood by reversing the Flow
Work smarter, not harder! Use gravity to provide the brain with more oxygen and blood, thus improving mental function, including concentration, memory and processing abilities. Inversions in Aerial Hammocks take away the stress from your body and assist in holding inversions for longer.
Increases Immunity
The lymphatic system is a key player in keeping the body healthy. As lymph moves through the body it picks up toxins and bacteria to be eliminated by the lymph nodes. Because lymph moves as a result of muscle contractions and gravity, getting upside-down allows lymph to more easily travel into the respiratory system, where many of the toxins enter the body. Aerial silk provides binds at key points in the body, places where the fluid builds up also on places where we hold our tensions and stresses. The binds help release Lymphatic fluid.

Energized and Relaxed
Different inversions with the assistance of the hammock can have different effects. Heating inversions energize and cooling inversion relax mind body and soul.
Improves Balance and core strength
It is not just about getting legs up in the air, it is about engaging the core to find the balance and hold it.
When our students achieve their first inversion they know they conquered their fear, their obstacle and that does wonders for their confidence.

Gain a new perspective, look at things upside down, world is different when hanging upside down. Physically and metaphorically it teaches us that there is always a different perspective to look at things/situations/persons/problems

Student Spotlight- One Year Anniversary

I am so proud to share our student spotlight today. It is moments like this that I cherish; for I remember the very first call I received from this now strong.fit.confident Aradia Goddess. In her voice I knew with certainity that she was clear about what she needed to do for her mind and body. I was equally aware of the slight fear of the unknown. I remember her first Intro to pole dance class with me, and how she waited with patience to get all her fears and questions answered. Every time I see her at the studio I feel a joy in my heart, I have seen her grow in her strength and confidence right before my eyes. She walks taller with proud shoulders, carries her body’s strength and embraces its sensuality with beauty, grace, and acceptance.

Aerial Yoga Aradia Goddess

Here is her experience in her words,

1/20/19 marked my 1 year anniversary stepping through the red door of Aradia Fitness Loudoun. After very little hesitation and an amazing phone call with Neelam (which i can remember vividly today), I strolled in excited to start and slightly nervous. What I’ve gained in the last year was much more than I ever imagined it to be; new sense of self love, empowerment, strength (that i never thought I’d get), and most importantly, the friendship with each of the ladies! Regardless of level, talent, size, or strength, everyone I’ve met has been unbelievably supportive and there is an out pour of love that fills the heart and soul. They are family to me! I’ve always wanted to be a dancer and Aradia Fitness Loudoun has brought that into fruition. I thank and love you all for helping me be a better me everyday!!

Words from Maya Angelou’s Poem come to my mind

It is in the reach of my Arms

The span of my hips

The stride of my step

The curve of my lips

I am a woman

Phenomenally

Phenomenal woman

That’s me

Express Gratitude Be Thankful

Feeling Gratitude and expressing it, month to be thankful

Be thankful

“Feeling Gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it”
 William Arthur Ward
We started a #thankfulchallenge2018 at the studio. With this challenge we are encouraging our students to write notes of things they are thankful for, seems like a childish activity. However, I truly believe that as busy women we tend to go through much of our life on autopilot with our very set routines. We rarely have time to ourselves let alone think of things that are seemingly not so critical.
If you have taken any of my classes pole or aerial yoga, you might have heard me mention that I find  my classes very meditative. Most of us are truly present mind body and soul in our classes and have left all our worries outside the studios red door, why not take a moment to truly think of things we are thankful for. The key to happiness I believe lies in gratitude, and gratitude begins with being thankful.
I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness—it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.” ~Brené Brown
We are so inclined to be chasers of the future that we completely neglect the present, and I believe being thankful, in a way forces us to pause in the moment, therefore making us live the present and actually feel that happy moment. Being thankful begins a chain, because in that moment we have shifted our focus to what we have and cherish. This moment of appreciation takes the focus away from “the lack of something”. Being thankful will make us happy and  boost our confidence because being in the present makes us more accepting of life right now.
In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.” ~Brother David Steindl-Rast
I have always believed happiness is lived in moments. Take the time to be thankful write it down live that moment and stick it on the wall of the studio anonymously!! Spread infectious gratitude this month.
Be Thankful
